Breaking Silos in Zambia’s Food System

Zambia, like many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, is facing a perfect storm heightened by the confluence of food insecurity, climate crisis and economic hardship. These complex challenges—coupled with a lack of livelihoods and education, especially for women and girls—are intersectional in nature, yet many organizations working on them are often doing so in silos. InnoVuntu is a response to this complex set of problems facing Zambia and many African countries.

InnoVuntu is a collaborative platform of systems leaders catalyzing food systems transformation in Zambia to a) support healthy communities b) bolster climate resilience, c) boost innovation, jobs and livelihoods, d) mobilize partnerships and investments, and e) build leadership and a cross-sectional leadership network.

In the coming months, we will launch the systems innovation process to create a shared vision, crowdsource innovations, and foster collective action across a powerful, diverse network of change agents, innovators, and systems leaders. We will Build an accelerator to enable stakeholders to turn their ideas into innovative and actionable projects, solutions, and strategies, and position them for investment and financial sustainability while developing the system leadership capacity and community to transform the food system in Zambia.

Powered by a partnership between ALT Foundation, GKI and the University of Zambia, our collaborative is designed to frame Zambia’s food-security challenges in ways that will bridge existing “silos,” generate cross-sectoral solutions and strategies, foster new working relationships so as to create new social capital.

GKI is actively seeking partners and collaborators. For more information: email the program team at innovuntu@altfoundation.africa, or visit www.innovuntu.org
